Air Filter, Fuel Filter, Spark Plugs
The problem: Your air filter needs to be changed. This is the most important filter in your car. Consequences: A clogged or restricted air filter may hinder airflow and draw contaminants into the engine. With today's finely tuned fuel injected systems, this not only leads to poor fuel economy but causes premature wear to the fuel injectors and moving components in the engine. Solution: Most air filters can be easily replaced, so we encourage customers not to risk it.
The problem: Your fuel filter needs to be changed. Consequences:Fuel filters become clogged with dirt and debris during normal operation and should be replaced to: increase performance, extend fuel pump life and aid in fuel economy. Solution:Unlike air filters, fuel filters are unable to be visually examined to determine if they require replacement, that's why it's important to replace a fuel filter on a regular basis, to ensure it's operating correctly and doesn't become blocked. Fuel filters are often mounted in hard to reach locations, including inside the fuel tank. This is a sample of fuel drained on to white paper from the inlet side of old fuel filter, just look at the mess. Has your fuel filter been changed recently?
The problem: Your spark plugs need to be changed. Consequences:A spark plug ignites the air / fuel mixture in the combustion chamber by creating an electrical spark. The spark plug has positive and negative electrodes. The positive electrode receives an electrical charge generated at the ignition coil, which jumps across an air gap to the negative electrode. The spark plug ignites the air fuel mixture to create an explosion that will push down on the piston, which turns a crank. If the air gap on the spark plug becomes too wide (usually caused by wear of the positive electrode) the electrical charge may not be able to jump the gap. When this happens there is no spark. When there is no spark, there is no explosion, and no downward pressure on the piston. This is called a misfire. A misfire will decrease performance and fuel economy, and if left unaddressed, may cause damage to the converter. Solution: To replace it, it is unscrewed from the head. On some cars this is very easy, on others, access to the plug is obstructed.
Your wiper refills needs changing and/or you require new wiper blade assemblies.
SERIOUS and LIFE THREATENING. 95% of all driving decisions are based on VISION, if you can't see due to disrupted vision, you are likely to have a serious car accident.
We will fit your car with new quality wiper blade assemblies.
The mileage indicates that your timing belt needs to be replaced.
SERIOUS. Timing belt failure can cause major internal engine damage. Fixing it before it is a problem is a lot cheaper than fixing it once it has failed. Also, a timing belt failure will leave you stranded. With timing belts, it's important to be proactive.
We will replace your timing belt. Timing belt replacement is a complex and technical procedure.
One or more of your tyres need to be changed due to being worn or damaged.
SERIOUS and LIFE THREATENING. Tyres represent the only contact between your car and the road. Your safety in regards to acceleration, braking, steering and cornering are currently compromised because the small area of road contact (your tyres) are not in good condition.
We will replace your tyre/s. Considering they carry the entire weight of your car, and keep you alive, they represent excellent value.
Tyre Rotation & Balancing
Your tyres are wearing out unevenly.
By uneven decreased wear you will need to replace particular tyres sooner. Also, unbalanced wheels will increase wear of your shock absorbers, struts, and other expensive steering and suspension components.
We will examine your tyres and will rotate and balance them so that they maximise tread and suspension life.
Suspension bushes are wearing out.
SERIOUS. Worn bushes cause rapid tyre wear and steering that is loose or pulling. Worn bushes also negatively impact braking and overall safe handling of your vehicle.
We will install replacement bushes that are stronger than the original rubber design.
You have worn shock absorbers.
SERIOUS. When shock absorbers begin to show excessive wear, they lose their ability to effectively stop the tyre from bouncing during different road conditions. If your tyre is bouncing it won't offer the same level of braking grip and handling capability as one that is maintaining constant contact with the road.
We will fit your car with quality shock absorbers.
Do You Know What Severe Conditions Means For Servicing Your Car ?
Sometimes driving conditions mean your vehicle may require additional servicing.
•Repeated short distance driving (eg. driving less then 8 kms per trip)
•Extreme heat (slow driving speeds and long idling periods lead to high under bonnet temperatures)
•Extensive idling or long periods of stop start driving.
•Towing a Trailer or Caravan, or driving in mountainous conditions.
•Driving in Muddy, or dusty roads.
Severe Conditions are not all that uncommon. Especially on our Heavily Congested Brisbane Road network. It is estimated that we operate our vehicles 80% of the time under one of the above "severe conditions" !
Look carefully at your owner's handbook. Manufactures recommend more frequent oil changes, around 5000 km or 3 Months if the vehicle is used under "severe conditions", to prevent sludge forming.
Typical city use is one of the operating conditions defined as "severe". Severe conditions are not all that uncommon, especially on our heavily congested Brisbane Road Network. It has been estimated that we operate our vehicles 80% of the time under "severe conditions"
Changing oil regularly is an essential part of a vehicles maintenance schedule.
Don't neglect your engines health !
Power Steering Flush
The fluid in the power steering reservoir has changed to a dark colour, which is an important indication that the power steering fluid needs to be flushed.
SERIOUS. The change in colouring is caused by fine metal particles suspended in the oil. These particles have already been pumped throughout the system, effectively becoming a grinding paste on any of the moving parts within the system. The abrasive action of these contaminants will damage seals, score shafts and bores, and foul the valve assemblies. Without attention, this can lead to a break down in the entire power steering, requiring expensive repairs to the power steering rack, box or pump.
Mansfield Motors can flush your power steering system and remove contaminated oil with a powerful cleaner, which suspends and dissolves varnish and gum residue in the power steering system. Then we will replenish it with new high-tech power steering fluid.
Your pedal rubber is worn.
SERIOUS and LIFE THREATENING. Worn pedal rubbers can allow wet or dry feet to slip off (or under) the pedals, either creating an emergency situation or being unable to avoid a collision in an emergency.
We will replace your worn out pedal rubbers.
Your car has a leak, which means vital lubricating fluid is escaping.
SERIOUS. A simple leak can completely ruin your engine, as well as other expensive engine ancillary items. Oil leaks do not go away by themselves, they get worse and create more damage as time goes on. It is very important to fix a leak as soon as it's discovered. To put it off will normally cost you more than fixing the leak itself.
We will find and repair the component that is leaking. The cost will depend on the amount of damage to the components.
Head Light Upgrade
Conventional head light globes don't offer enhanced vision.
Reduced night vision.
Fitment of High Performance Blue Power upgraded Globe Set.
Engine Bay Degrease
Your engine bay (the area that houses your engine and all its components) is unclean.
SERIOUS. Leaks and wearing components are not visible and therefore not fixed. Left unchecked, leaks and wearing components can lead to thousands of dollars damage to your engine.
Mansfield Motors will soak your engine bay with environmentally friendly biodegradable degreaser, and use high pressure to wash down the entire engine bay. We will then blow dry all electrical connectors and spark plug leads as required.
Drum Brake & Wheel Cylinders
Wear and corrosion inside the wheel cylinders may be reaching a critical point.
SERIOUS & LIFE THREATENING. Excessive wear or leakage must be dealt with immediately! If any of these components fail or wears sufficiently, the brakes may fail suddenly and without warning. These components are so important to vehicle safety that any fluid leakage from wheel cylinders or excessive wear renders the vehicle in an un-roadworthy condition.
At Mansfield Motors, during every service we remove the brake drums, to fully inspect the rear brakes. If they require work we will advise you. If required, we will replace the wheel cylinders to restore the brakes to like-new condition.
Drive Shaft / Cv Boots
Your CV Boot is worn &/or torn
SERIOUS. Torn CV boots allow grease meant to lubricate the joint to escape, this allows dirt and debris to enter inside the joint which causes premature Cv joint failure. A Worn CV joint usually produces a loud abnormal clacking noise from the wheel area when it's being turned, but by this time it's too late to replace the boot. If left in this condition the joint will catastrophically fail, which will cause complete loss of drive to the wheels.
We will replace your CV boots or drive shafts as required.
One or more of your drive belts need to be replaced.
SERIOUS. Drive belts quite literally keep the many wheels of the engine turning. The failure of an ancillary drive belt will cause engine failure due to overheating, or the loss of power steering assistance during cornering.
We will fit your car with new, quality drive belts.
There is a problem with your disc brakes.
SERIOUS & LIFE THREATENING. Your disk brakes enable your car to stop. If you can’t brake, then you are endangering your own life, the lives of your passengers, and the lives of other road users.
In short, we fix your disc brakes so that you and your passengers are safe again. See below for more details.
How we fix your disk brakes in order to keep you safe again:
If your disc rotors are still above minimum safe reusable thickness, their working surface can be machined back to near new condition.
When new brake pads are fitted, we ‘machine' disc rotors to ensure maximum braking efficiency
Mansfield Motors accurately and efficiently machine your worn disc rotors back to as new condition using our own in-house On Car Brake Lathe.
If your rotors are below minimum safe thickness, Mansfield Motors can supply OEM standard replacement disc rotors as required.
Good Brakes are absolutely essential for safe driving. This is how they work:
The basic parts of a disc brake system. The pads are the friction material. When the brakes are applied, the pads are the part that makes contact with the disc rotor, creating friction and stopping the car. This friction causes the pad and rotor to wear.
The pads are moved by hydraulic pressure, created in the master cylinder, pushing brake fluid through the brake lines and pushing out a hydraulic piston attached to the pad. In a disc brake system this cylinder is found in the calliper.
Disc Rotor Minimum Thickness:Disc Brake Rotor Minimum Thickness (also known as Scrap Thickness) is the minimum safe working thickness of a rotor at which it must be replaced. Continued operation at or below Minimum Thickness can lead to brake system failure. As the rotor reaches its minimum thickness, braking distance increases, sometimes up to 4 meters! Mansfield Motors accurately measure your cars disc rotors and advise you on the best course of action.
Disc Thickness Variation (DTV): Is a condition where the disc rotor varies in thickness. After thousands of braking applications disc rotors wear, and usually in an uneven manner. DTV occurs due to uneven wear of the rotor during normal brake operation, and can be easily remedied by the machining of the disc rotors if they are still above minimum safe thickness.
To have your disk brakes returned to a safe condition, please book in your car at your earliest convenience.
Cooling System Service
Your cooling system is not performing effectively, which means that your engine is not operating at its safest and most efficient temperature.
SERIOUS. The failure of any cooling system component will cause major expensive internal engine damage, from blown cylinder head gaskets to a completely destroyed engine due to overheating and seizure.
Using state of the art equipment, Mansfield Motors thoroughly internally cleans and revitalizes your cooling system. This replaces up to 95% of your old coolant and safely removes damaging deposits and debris (scale, rust, dirt etc) from the engine, radiator, heater core and hoses; thus prolonging the life of your radiator and water pump. Also, conditioning the cooling system helps prevent leaks. It's quite simply one of the most important things we can do for your car.
Engine Carbon Flush
Dirt, varnish and carbon deposits have formed in your vehicle's fuel system.
SERIOUS. Left untreated, this can lead to costly, reactive engine repairs.
Mansfield Motor's On Car Fuel System Flush & Carbon Clean Service is a professional process that will clean your complete fuel system, including the fuel injectors. It will safely remove harmful carbon deposits from throttle bodies and intake valves, which means that fuel economy will improve, horsepower will increase, and exhaust emissions will reduce.
Bump Stops & Boots
Protective rubber shock absorbers boots are perished & fallen apart or missing altogether.
Premature shock absorber failure.
To replace, the complete shock absorber has to be removed from the vehicle and the spring compressed and Removed.
Your brake fluid has degraded over time.
SERIOUS & LIFE THREATENING. Many brake problems can be traced to air or contamination of the hydraulic fluid. Left unchecked, you can experience a reduction in braking performance.
Brake fluid retains moisture so it will be flushed and re-bled (remove the air from the system) to keep the brakes working effectively; it also restores soft pedal pressure and avoids internal corrosion of brake components. At Mansfield Motors we follow manufacturers recommendations every 2 Years or 40 000 km's, or by testing and inspecting the brake fluids condition and advising you if it requires replacement.
Your battery has limited life, which means that one day your car won't start
Cars that require a new battery rarely exhibit signs of impending battery failure, which means that you may be unexpectedly stranded when your car doesn't start. Often the first sign of a problem is that your car won't start at all!
Have your battery fitted FREE of charge by our qualified mechanics (when the battery is purchased from Mansfield Motors). We do NOT use cheap or imported batteries that end up being a waste of your money. Please read below for more details.
Ball Joints, Tie Rod Ends & Rack Ends
Please read below for each problem.
SERIOUS & LIFE THREATENING. Excessive wear must be dealt with quickly. If any of these joints wears sufficiently, the joint will separate suddenly and without warning; and the road wheel will be free to oscillate, causing: sudden loss of steering, damage to the tyre, damage to the wheel and damage to suspension. These components are so important to vehicle safety that any split rubber boots, excessive wear, or movement, renders the vehicle in an un-roadworthy condition.
We will replace the components as per below.
If Ball Joints wear out you will experience uneven tyre wear or unreliable steering
A ball joint is a steel bearing stud and socket enclosed in a steel casing. Ball joints are subject to a harsh environment so to properly protect them, ball joints are housed in an enclosed rubber boot to keep dirt away from the joint assembly, which would otherwise cause premature wear and failure. Ball joints connect the control arms to the steering knuckles and allow the knuckle to pivot when turning. Ball joints have to be strong enough to support your car's weight. If the ball joints wear out and are not changed, you will soon experience uneven tyre wear or unreliable steering, such as wandering. Worn out ball joints are a safety issue that must be tended to and fixed immediately.
For the same reason as above, Outer Tie Rod Ends and Inner tie rod ends are just as important
Outer Tie Rod Ends are almost identical to ball joints, but are normally smaller because they don't carry the weight of the vehicle. They do however connect your steering rack to the wheel spindle, pushing and pulling it to turn the wheel.
The Steering rack is connected to an inner tie rod that is covered by a rubber bellows for protection. The inner tie rod end is connected to the outer tie rod end. These tie ends have the ability to move in any linear direction. Finally, the tie rod end is connected to the wheel spindle.
Protective Rubber Boots Stop The Worst Enemy: contamination!
Contamination is the worst enemy to all these suspension components. All of these joints are protected by some sort of rubber cover called a boot, gaiter or bellows. These rubber guardians keep the important lubricating grease in, and keep OUT road debris such as dust, dirt, water, and stones - otherwise they will enter the moving joints causing premature wear, which could result in failure. If caught early enough the protective boot can simply be replaced and the joint regreased. If left unreported or neglected, premature wear and failure will occur, resulting in the expensive replacement of the complete assembly.
At Mansfield Motors we always inspect your suspension during a service in order to protect your safety and prevent costly repairs. Please consider our recommendations and rebook your car at your earliest convenience.
